Cultural Hints when travelling South America

There are certain rules you should observe while travelling to ensure that you don’t distress or offend local populations. Remember that you will be seen to be in a position of privilege (you could afford to come here, after all) and that you should respect rather than abuse local customs, habits and hospitality.

People generally shake hands upon introduction throughout the continent, and express pleasure at having made the acquaintance – no matter how briefly – of others. It is common to wish people you meet on the street “Buenos días” (“bom dia” in Brazil) or “buenos tardes” (“boa tarde” in Brazil).

Politeness is generally a way of life in South America, and pleasantries are always exchanged before getting to any kind of business. You should also be polite to street vendors, no matter how annoyed you get with their peddling of their wares. Remember that this is their livelihood and smile, saying “no, gracias” or “não, obrigado”, but if you decide to buy something, remember also to be firm – ask the price and then confirm it before proffering any cash. Dress with respect in official or religious buildings
